Smart mirror can help you avoid a hair disaster and find your perfect look

Anyone who has had their hair dyed will probably understand the fear of picking a colour that ends up not working, but technology has a solution for us. Finally.

At one of the CES 2019 preview events I got to test out a new look on my own ridiculous hairstyle. Powered by CareOS and the hair experts at Wella the smart mirror gives customers a way to try out hair colour risk-free.

The process is simple enough. A gesture-based interface allows you to interact with the mirror. You stand in front of it and set up the lighting to suit the room you’re in. The mirror, which is really a monitor, then shows you a live video of yourself.

You’re then presented with a selection of colour options, so naturally I went for ginger, because why not.

And the results were actually very good. Movement is tracked accurately, so you can turn your head and see the colour from all angles. It was as if I’d had a dye job done in milliseconds.

I opted not to follow through with the actual colour, but there didn’t seem to be any hairdressers on hand to help me change my tone anyway.

While the Wella system is aimed at salons, CareOS can work on other devices too – allowing you to use a smartphone to check out new looks if you want to prepare for your salon visit ahead of time.

CareOS is, as the name suggests, not just about hair colour, it’s a platform that allows companies to build their own services and products.

Hotels are now signing up to use smart mirrors based on the tech – presumably to guide customers to services they offer.
